Big Sister Mongsil몽실언니
「몽실언니」는 권정생의 동화 『몽실 언니』에서 출발한 작품입니다. 해방과 전쟁으로 고단했던 시절, 어린 몸으로 동생 난남이를 업어 키우면서도 착한 마음과 웃음을 잃지 않았던 몽실이를 닥종이로 빚었습니다.
흰 저고리 위로 분홍 포대기를 질끈 동여맨 아이의 등 뒤로, 업힌 동생의 작은 머리가 살짝 보입니다. 검은 치마에 고무신을 신은 아이는 무거운 짐을 진 채로도 고개를 들어 하늘을 바라보며 웃고 있습니다.
나무 액자 왼편에서 뻗어 나온 마른 가지 끝에는 연둣빛 새순이 돋아 있습니다. 겨울을 견딘 가지에 봄이 깃드는 것처럼, 아이의 웃음은 가장 힘든 시간 속에서도 피어나는 희망을 말합니다.
작품은 우리 모두의 곁에 있었던 '언니'들을 떠올리게 합니다. 자신의 몫을 내려놓고 동생과 가족을 먼저 업어 주었던 사람들, 그 등에 기대어 우리가 자랄 수 있었던 시간을 조용히 불러냅니다.
Big Sister Mongsil begins with Kwon Jeong-saeng's children's novel Mongsil Eonni. It shapes in dakjongi the girl Mongsil, who, in the hard years of liberation and war, carried and raised her little sister Nannam on her own small back, yet never lost her kind heart or her smile.
A pink baby carrier is tied tight over the girl's white jeogori, and the small head of the sister on her back peeks out behind her. In a black skirt and rubber shoes, the girl lifts her head toward the sky and smiles, even under her heavy load.
From the left side of the wooden frame a bare branch reaches out, with pale green buds sprouting at its tip. Just as spring settles on a branch that has endured winter, the girl's smile speaks of hope that blooms even in the hardest of times.
The work brings to mind the 'big sisters' who were beside us all — people who set aside their own share and carried their siblings and families first. It quietly calls back the years when we were able to grow up leaning on their backs.

Mongsil Eonni is a story I have long carried in my heart. In times of hunger and pain, Mongsil set aside her own childhood to carry and raise her little sister, and her face overlaps with the faces of the countless 'big sisters' who were beside us.
The girl in this work smiles at the sky even under a heavy load. I thought of that smile not as the smile of someone who knows no pain, but as the smile of a heart that never stops loving people even after enduring everything.
So I set a bare branch beside her and put a small new bud at its tip. Because spring always comes, even to a branch that has passed through winter.
