Sawol
Sawol is a bust of a child laughing with her whole face, head tipped back and eyes closed. Two tiny new teeth peek out from her open mouth, and her rosy cheeks puff up round, pushed by the laughter.
Her hair is made of white dakjongi layered sheet by sheet like petals. It is as if the petals drifting through an April sky have settled softly on her head — as if spring recognised this child first.
With no clothing or props, only a face and shoulders, the work draws every glance to a single thing: laughter. The cosy texture of dakjongi adds warmth to her plump cheeks and the soft line of her shoulders.
A face that laughs without asking why. Standing before the work, a frowning heart loosens by itself, and we feel the winter inside us take a step back.

Whose laughter melted your winter?
Head tipped back, eyes closed, laughing: the work moves the heart with laughter alone.
The little teeth showing in her open mouth look like a symbol of new life just beginning, of a first spring.
Her hair, layered from white dakjongi like petals, looks as though April blossoms have settled on her head.
With no clothes or props, only face and shoulders remain, so the viewer's eyes rest entirely on the laughter and the texture of dakjongi.
Recall a baby's first laugh, or the face of someone who smiled at you for no reason at all.
A spring song in 6/8 time capturing the laughter of Sawol — the child with petal-white hair, the name spring calls first.
Spring always came with laughter. When windows closed all winter were thrown open and petals began to drift, children's laughter was the first thing to fill the alleys.
I made Sawol wanting to shape the face of that spring. I covered her hair in white petals and left on her face nothing but laughter that bursts out for no reason at all.
A baby's laughter has a power that needs no questions. Before a face that simply smiles — without asking what happened or how hard it was — we slowly let our hearts relax.
I hope you will remember the laughter that melted your winter as you stand before this work — and that today you become that laughter for someone else.
