「It's a Wonderful Life II」

It's a Wonderful Life II captures a lazy afternoon: a grandmother reclining on a beach chair under a yellow parasol. In an orange swimsuit and a blue hat pulled low, she closes her eyes and enjoys the sunshine and sea breeze with her whole body.

One hand lightly holds the brim of her hat, and her legs stretch out comfortably. As if she is past the age of caring what others think, her pose holds an unselfconscious freedom and a simple joy.

Beside the figure shaped in dakjongi, a real parasol, a striped chair and a sand-coloured base complete a small beach. Instead of a painted sea, the sound of waves in the viewer's imagination fills the scene.

It is a holiday finally granted to herself by someone who, in her younger days, only pictured the sea through the kitchen window. The work speaks of a summer all the more dazzling for arriving late.

It's a wonderful life

Artist's note

I made this work imagining a poetic moment of celebrating one's own life right where one stands, even if it is not on a glamorous stage.

Our mothers spent their lives looking at the sea only from afar. Busy taking care of the family's summers, they always put off their own summer until later.

I imagined what it would be like if one of them took out a flowered swimsuit one day, lay down under a yellow parasol, and closed her eyes — an afternoon when doing nothing is perfectly fine, a time for nothing but the sound of the waves.

In the grandmother's relaxed pose and the fingertips holding her hat, I wanted to place the gentle holiday she is giving herself at last, however late.

I hope you will think of the rest you have put off as you stand before this work. The place where you lie down right now may be your paradise.
