The Flutter of First Love
The Flutter of First Love holds, in one child's gesture, the feeling of a heart pounding for reasons she did not yet understand. In the hanji-coloured space inside the wooden frame, pink petals float lightly up toward the sky.
The child, with bobbed hair, a white jeogori and a vivid pink skirt, rests one hand on her cheek and smiles with her eyes squeezed shut. Her other arm stretches out with the wind, as if she might rise up with the petals at any moment.
If the petals in the first two works scattered and fell, the petals here rise. They are the inexplicable tremor that stirred my heart in those days — a feeling that wells up and cannot be hidden. A tiny green frog sitting at the child's feet adds a smile, like a secret witness to this fluttering moment.
A heart that could not say a single word, yet wrote someone's name again and again in the corner of a notebook. The work tenderly recalls the clumsy, lovely spring that almost everyone has had at least once.
Pink petals rise into the sky, carrying a child's first, unexplained flutter of the heart.
When was the spring that first stirred your heart?
Petals that neither scatter nor fall but rise into the sky stand for a first flutter that wells up and cannot be hidden.
Feel the racing heart of those days in her face — part shyness, part joy — and in the palm resting on her cheek.
The brightest skirt in the series is the colour of the most vividly remembered feeling: first love.
Look for the tiny green frog hiding at her feet — the small witness to this secret moment.
Recall the first day you smiled thinking of someone, and the spring when your heart raced for no reason.
An upbeat retro folk-pop song about the first, unexplained flutter of the heart.
The pink petals floating lightly up into the sky are the inexplicable tremor that stirred my heart in those days.
When we first came to like someone, we didn't know what it was. We only knew that we smiled for no reason when that child walked by, that our cheeks grew warm, and that we felt light all day though nothing had happened.
The child in this work expresses that indescribable feeling with her whole body. With a hand on her cheek and her eyes squeezed shut, she lets herself be carried by the rising petals. The green frog at her feet is the only friend who knows her secret.
Time has blurred that other child's face, yet strangely, every spring, the warmth of the palm I once pressed to my cheek is the first thing I remember.
I hope you will recall your own first flutter in front of this work. That spring, lovelier for being clumsy, may still be rising like petals somewhere in your heart.
