「웃음이 올라앉은 날」은 고양이 시리즈의 마지막 작품입니다. 넉넉한 흰 여백을 품은 나무 액자 한가운데, 짙은 회색 화면 위로 한 아이가 고개를 젖힌 채 온 얼굴로 깔깔 웃고 있습니다. 눈은 초승달처럼 접히고, 크게 벌린 입에서는 웃음소리가 터져 나오는 것만 같습니다.
아이의 머리 꼭대기에는 하얀 새끼 고양이 한 마리가 사뿐히 올라앉아 있습니다. 고양이는 앞발 하나로 아이의 머리칼을 짚고, 화면 밖으로 살짝 고개를 내민 채 아래를 내려다봅니다. 아이를 웃게 만든 것이 바로 이 작은 손님인 듯합니다.
「어깨위 작은 위로」 I과 II에서 고양이는 아이의 어깨에 기대어 콧노래를 들어 주고, 울음을 달래 주었습니다. 이번에는 어깨를 지나 머리 꼭대기까지 올라가, 마침내 아이를 활짝 웃게 만들었습니다. 낮은 곳에서 시작된 작은 위로가 가장 높은 곳에 올라앉은 순간입니다.
닥종이를 결대로 붙여 빚은 아이의 얼굴에는 주름 하나하나에 웃음이 배어 있습니다. 작품은 말없이 곁에 머물던 작은 온기가 결국 가장 환한 웃음이 되어 돌아온다고 이야기합니다.
The Day Laughter Perched on Top is the final work in the cat series. In the middle of a wooden frame with a generous white margin, a child tips her head back against a dark grey background and laughs with her whole face. Her eyes fold into crescent moons, and laughter seems to burst from her wide-open mouth.
On the very top of her head, a little white kitten has lightly perched. Steadying itself on her hair with one front paw, it peeks out just beyond the picture and looks down. This small visitor seems to be the very reason she is laughing.
In Small Comfort on My Shoulder I and II, the cat leaned on the child's shoulder, listening to her humming and soothing his tears. This time it climbs past the shoulder all the way to the top of the head, and at last makes the child laugh out loud. It is the moment when a small comfort that began low down perches at the very top.
In the child's face, built from dakjongi applied along its grain, laughter has soaked into every crease. The work says that the small warmth that quietly stayed beside us returns, in the end, as the brightest laughter of all.

고양이 시리즈를 마무리하며, 이번에는 아이를 마음껏 웃게 해 주고 싶었습니다.
첫 번째 작품에서 고양이는 아이의 어깨에 기대 콧노래를 들어 주었고, 두 번째 작품에서는 울음을 참는 아이의 목을 끌어안았습니다. 기쁠 때도 슬플 때도 곁에 있어 준 그 작은 존재가, 마지막에는 아이의 머리 꼭대기까지 올라가 앉았습니다.
위로는 늘 낮은 곳에서 조용히 시작되지만, 쌓이고 쌓이면 결국 가장 높은 곳에서 환한 웃음이 되어 피어난다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 이 작품의 제목을 '웃음이 올라앉은 날'이라고 지었습니다.
언젠가 다시 눈물 나는 날이 오더라도, 오늘 이 작품 앞에서 함께 웃었던 순간을 기억해 주시기 바랍니다.
To close the cat series, this time I wanted to let the child laugh to her heart's content.
In the first work the cat leaned on the child's shoulder and listened to her humming; in the second it hugged the neck of a child holding back tears. That small being, which stayed beside them in joy and in sorrow, finally climbed up and sat on the very top of the child's head.
I believe comfort always begins quietly, low down — but as it builds up, it finally blossoms into bright laughter at the highest point. That is why I named this work The Day Laughter Perched on Top.
Even if a day of tears comes again someday, I hope you will remember the moment you laughed together in front of this work today.
