Explorers

Explorers graced the cover of this exhibition's catalogue. It shows three boys sitting in a circle on the ground, getting ready for their next adventure.

The boy on the left, in a navy hoodie, throws one hand up and points at the sky. The boy in the middle wears a backpack, holds a butterfly net upright like a flag, and grips a rolled-up sheet of paper as if it were a map. The boy on the right rests a hand on the brim of his cap and purses his lips to whistle — as though signalling the crew to gather.

A ladybird resting on a knee, shoelaces, a bag slung over a shoulder: every fold of clothing and every small prop, made by crumpling and layering dakjongi, holds a whole day of childhood. The three boys look and point in different directions, yet they belong together like members of one expedition sharing the same dream.

To children, a nameless alley or the long grass on the hill behind the village was an undiscovered continent. This work calls back the expeditions of our early years, when we filled our pockets with pebbles and leaves like treasure — and the children we were, who still wait somewhere inside us.

Things to look for

  1. 01

  1. 01

A hand pointing to the sky

Follow the raised fingertip of the boy on the left. The expedition's next destination lies there.

  2. 02

    A butterfly net and a rolled-up map

The leader's butterfly net becomes a flag, and the paper in his hand becomes a map no one has drawn yet.

  3. 03

    A whistled signal

With a hand on his cap and his lips pursed, the boy on the right is calling the scattered crew back together.

  4. 04

    Small details

A red ladybird on a knee, shoelaces, a backpack and a bag. Each prop shaped in dakjongi carries a child's whole day.

Artist's note

As children, we were all explorers. A folded sheet of paper became a map, and a butterfly net became a flag. Something extraordinary always seemed to be waiting at the end of the alley or just over the hill behind the village.

The three children in this work are us, on those days. One points to the sky, one unfolds the map, and one whistles to call the others. Because there were three of them, there was nothing to fear.

That is why I chose this piece for the cover of the exhibition. I hoped everyone who walked in would become, for a little while, a member of a childhood expedition, and look at each work as if discovering a new continent.

Even if we lost our maps when we grew up, now and then raise your hand and point to the sky. The children we were may still be waiting just beyond that hill.
