Toward the Heights!

Toward the Heights!

Toward the Heights! is a group sculpture of three children standing on one another to reach toward the sky. The child at the top leans on a friend's shoulder to rise up and points far into the distance, while the children below hold him up and hug him close, all looking toward the same place.

The work is shaped from nothing but the grain of white hanji, without colour. Stripped of colour, the white children seem not to be anyone in particular but all of us, and the lines of their touching arms and legs flow into a single great gesture.

Heights that cannot be reached alone can be reached by borrowing one another's backs and shoulders. The fingertip of the child on top carries the dreams of the friends holding him up from below, and the sky he points to becomes, in the end, everyone's sky.

The work quietly speaks of the times when we could see further because we were together — and of the day it will be our turn to become someone's stepping stone.

Artist's note

Some heights cannot be reached alone. However high you stand on tiptoe, the sky keeps slipping away from your fingertips.

The children in this work borrow one another's shoulders and backs to draw closer to that height. The child on top can point to the sky only because friends below are quietly holding him up.

I left them uncoloured, with only the grain of white hanji, because I hoped these children would be not anyone in particular but all of us. Everyone has, at some point, stood on someone's shoulders, and also been someone's stepping stone.

I hope you will think of the people who held you up as you stand before this work — and that this time you will gladly bend your back to send someone further.
