Song of the Wind

Song of the Wind

Song of the Wind shows a child standing in the wind beneath a bare branch that has shed all its leaves, inside a wooden frame. Eyes closed and head lifted, the child holds both hands quietly near the ears, as if listening with all their heart to a song coming from somewhere.

The open coat and skirt billow far to one side, and the hair streams along the wind. It is the moment when the invisible wind finally shows itself, through the child's clothes and hair.

The figure is shaped in a single earthy hanji colour, without paint. The folds of the clothing, made by crumpling and layering dakjongi, become the very grain of the wind, breathing flowing movement into a still work. A real branch reaching out from the top of the frame quietly shows the place where a season has passed.

Like a branch that has given away all its leaves, some things can only be heard when we are empty. The work speaks of things we see only with our eyes closed, and things more beautiful because they cannot be held.

Artist's note

The wind cannot be seen. But when our hair streams and our clothes flutter, we know for certain that the wind is passing by.

The child in this work listens to that invisible thing — eyes closed, hands to the ears, hearing the song the wind tells. In that song are the farewells of what has gone and the promise of seasons that will return.

Above the child I hung a bare branch that has shed all its leaves. An empty branch may look lonely, but I thought there are things we can only hear once we are empty.

I hope you will close your eyes for a moment in front of this work. A song you have been missing in your busy days may be passing right by you.
